The first grocery store we went to in France had canned ravioli. I know this may not seem like a definitive reason why France is great, but if you are trying to consume several thousand calories each day and the only time you stoop so low as to eat highly processed, not nutritional, bland, canned pasta (which, by the way, you love) is when you are on a bike tour, and you can't find it in any Spanish grocery store, it defines France as great. Also Katie was able to get cooked vegetables there which hasn't been an option in the past month. It felt like we entered the land if plenty. Not all of the windows have bars over them and the grocery store parking lots are not gated, both of which feel very welcoming.
Our interaction with the locals has been super inviting as well. The receptionist at the first hotel we stopped at upon entering France called all of the hotels in the next town to see if they were open and could give us a better price. A woman who spoke no English in the prepared food section of the grocery walked Katie to the produce aisle to point out all the vegetables used in her cooking.
We've biked along some beautiful canals, slept nearly on the beach and now in Montpellier we are avoiding the rain the best we can.
