We made a brief visit to Monaco. It's small enough to bike across in an hour and we stopped for a croissant along the way. It seems like they are trying to move all of the roads underground we went through so many tunnels. The buildings were large and ornate and the harbor was full of fantastic yachts. Like many of the towns approaching the Italian border it was surrounded by steep cliffs with hotels and homes perched on the edge of those cliffs.
The rest of France was beautiful as well. We detoured away from the coast for a few days for a change of scenery. The mountains and countryside were a welcome change and we found some great camping spots. I have yet to sleep outside in a remote enough area to get away from barking dogs though. It doesn't matter how far from towns or high on a mountain we are, the dog collective will let me know they are not far.
While many of the coastal towns were bright and vibrant the small towns in the countryside were very dull. It seems like whole towns agreed that concrete grey will be the only color used. Other things worth noting (or not); toilet paper is cut into rectangles. Still no women in the bars. I passed the largest camp grounds I have ever seen. The campgrounds are always surrounded by paintball, go carts, miniature golf and an amusement park. The French do wear horizontal stripes. The olives on pizzas are not pitted. Many of the cyclists do not wear helmets. Bocci ball is played everywhere, there are even courts specifically for it in most of the towns. And the best part about France was the wind. It blew on our backs nearly every day!
